NKIAWETE'S STORY

"I call the brand Nkiawete simply because it is my name, my grandfather's name, and my original name, which I would get if it wasn’t to operate under the European standards to be accepted in this society.

I have seen many streetwear/‘black owned’’ brands growing up that have inspired me, but they didn’t last past my generation, whereas brands like Gucci, Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Yves Saint Laurent, etc., are still here after several decades.

They all have in common that they are designers who have used their original names, so I thought I should do the same, especially since you can find many recognised European, American, or Asian brand names but no African brand names."
